As a LGV and PCV training company TTS are often asked about the driver medical which is needed for a potential driver to apply for their provisional licence, and it is required every time your licence comes up for renewal.
For LGV provisional entitlements requests you must complete the D2 application form and the D4 Medical form. Once completed, the forms need to be sent to DVLA with your current licence card. TTS can help you with this process and can provide the forms if required.
TTS can offer medicals at their SASMI site, the medical is carried out by a Doctor. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you may need your optician to complete the section on eyesight.

Why do I need an HGV driver’s medical to drive a lorry or a PCV Driver’s medical to drive a bus?
It is the law to be medically fit to drive a lorry or a bus, and drivers of large vehicles must prove a higher level of medical fitness than car drivers.
DVLA require existing lorry drivers to have a medical at the age of 45 and then every five years until the age of 65. After 65, the medical has to be done every year.
What happens at a driver’s medical?
You will have a medical examination with a doctor to declare that you meet the higher medical standards required to drive either an HGV lorry or a PCV bus.
The doctor with will examine/check:
- Medical history
- Alcohol or drug abuse
- Blood pressure
- Cardiac/heart disorders
- Eyesight test
- Neurological disorders
- Psychiatric disorders
- Sleep disorders
- Urine test for diabetes
How long will a D4 medical take?
The medical should take approximately 20 minutes.
