Opening the Door to Logistics: Norham High School Students Experience Life at TTS

At Tyneside Training Services (TTS), we believe that the best way to inspire the next generation is by giving them the opportunity to experience the workplace first hand.

Last week, we were delighted to welcome a fantastic group of Year 10 ARP students from Norham High School for an action-packed work experience day designed to showcase the exciting career opportunities available within the transport and logistics industry.

From operating around our forklift training centre to climbing into the cab of one of our LGV vehicles, the students experienced the industry from every angle while gaining valuable insight into the many roles that keep the UK's supply chain moving.

A Hands-On Introduction to Logistics

The day began at our forklift training centre, where students learned how warehouse operations function and discovered the vital role material handling equipment plays in keeping businesses running efficiently.

Under the guidance of our experienced instructors, they explored:

• How forklifts are used safely within warehouses

• The importance of health and safety in logistics

• The different careers available within warehouse operations

• How teamwork and communication are essential in the workplace

  
  

The students then travelled to our Cramlington LGV training centre, where the excitement continued.

Each student had the opportunity to climb into the cab of one of our LGV vehicles before heading out on the road with one of our professional instructors, experiencing what life behind the wheel of a heavy goods vehicle is really like.

For many, it was their first time inside an HGV and certainly one of the highlights of the day.

Developing Skills for the Future

While the experience was designed to be engaging and enjoyable, it also gave students the opportunity to build valuable employability skills including:

• Communication

• Teamwork

• Organisation

• Problem solving

• Confidence

• Workplace awareness

Throughout the day, health and safety remained a key priority, helping students understand the standards expected across the logistics industry while giving them the confidence to take part in every activity safely.

"The Girls and staff provided an excellent opportunity for our Year 10 ARP students to experience the logistics industry through their work experience placement at TTS. Throughout the day, the students demonstrated a high level of engagement, showing enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to participate while learning about the day-to-day operations of a busy logistics company. The placement highlighted the importance of teamwork, communication, organisation and problem solving in a professional working environment. Inspiring the Next Generation

The logistics industry is responsible for keeping the country moving, yet many young people never get the chance to see what happens behind the scenes.

Experiences like this help students discover careers they may never have considered while developing confidence, employability skills and a greater understanding of the working world.

At TTS, we are proud to support schools across the North East by providing meaningful work experience placements that give young people a genuine insight into transport, logistics and warehousing.
