Urban Driver Apprenticeship Success at North Tyneside Council

Tyneside Training Services is proud to recognise the recent success of the Urban Driver Apprenticeship cohort at North Tyneside Council. Every apprentice on the programme has now successfully achieved their apprenticeship, with a number of the group achieving Distinction. This is a strong reflection of the commitment effort and professionalism shown throughout their journey.

Achieving Distinction requires consistency engagement and a high standard of work across both on programme learning and day to day responsibilities. For this group it represents not only academic achievement but the application of learning in a real operational environment.

"The apprentices have shown strong commitment and consistent progress throughout their apprenticeship. They have also shown positive attitudes to learning, responding well to feedback and using it to improve their performance."

Genine Selby, Trainer

The Urban Driver Apprenticeship

The Urban Driver Apprenticeship is designed to support drivers working in operational roles where safety professionalism and responsibility are essential. Delivered alongside full time employment the programme allows apprentices to develop their skills while continuing to carry out their role within the organisation.

All apprentices within this cohort also operate as Winter Maintenance Operatives. The apprenticeship reflects this responsibility and supports the knowledge skills and behaviours required for both routine driving duties and seasonal winter operations. This ensures learning is relevant practical and directly linked to the role each apprentice carries out on a daily basis.

"When Kayleigh and Genine came on board it become really entertaining. So in the end I'm really glad I had taken part. "

Justin Watson, Apprentice

The Wider Value of Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships play an important role in developing people within the workplace. They offer a structured way to build confidence capability and consistency while allowing individuals to continue working and contributing to their organisation.

Rather than focusing solely on gaining a qualification apprenticeships support long term development. They help individuals understand their role more deeply improve standards and take pride in the work they do. For employers this means a more skilled confident and engaged workforce.

Employer Led and Role Specific Training

At Tyneside Training Services apprenticeship delivery is shaped around the employer and the job role. Training is not delivered using a fixed model but is adapted to reflect how each organisation operates and what each apprentice does in practice.

By aligning learning to real responsibilities apprentices are able to apply knowledge immediately which supports engagement and stronger outcomes. This approach also ensures the apprenticeship adds genuine value to both the learner and the employer.

Learner Experience and Achievement

Throughout the programme this cohort demonstrated commitment and a positive attitude to learning. Achieving Distinction reflects the effort they put into developing their skills and applying learning in the workplace.

For many apprentices the programme supported increased confidence and professional development alongside formal recognition of their ability.

"The beginning was challenging during learning sessions, however once Kayleigh and Genine took over things took a positive turn. With their support I sailed through the rest of the course and achieved what I set for."

Liam Evans, Apprentice

Celebrating Success

Following the release of their results Tyneside Training Services invited the group to celebrate their achievement at our box at the Newcastle Red Bulls. Taking time to recognise success is an important part of learning culture and reflects the value placed on the hard work shown by the apprentices throughout the programme.
