Driver CPC in 2026: What Operators Need to Know

Driver CPC remains a legal requirement for professional HGV drivers across the UK. In 2026 there is increased focus on compliance, delivery standards and operator responsibility. While the requirement of 35 hours of periodic training every five years has not changed, expectations around quality, attendance and forward planning continue to strengthen.

For operators, CPC cannot be left until the final months of the cycle. A structured plan protects compliance and avoids unnecessary operational disruption.

What Has Changed in 2026

The overall framework of Driver CPC remains the same, but there is clearer distinction between National and International routes, stronger monitoring of approved training providers and greater accountability placed on operators to ensure drivers remain qualified.

The emphasis across the industry is now on quality and relevance. CPC should reinforce safety, compliance and operational standards rather than simply meeting minimum hours.

Periodic vs Initial Driver CPC

For most operators, the focus is periodic Driver CPC. This involves:

• 35 hours of approved training

• Completed within a five year cycle

• No further test required

Initial Driver CPC applies to new vocational drivers and includes additional case study and practical assessments.

The most common compliance risk comes from leaving periodic CPC too late. Spreading training evenly across the five year cycle removes pressure and protects continuity.

Online and Classroom Driver CPC in 2026

One of the biggest developments in recent years has been the growth in approved online delivery. Operators now have greater flexibility in how training is delivered, depending on operational needs and driver preference.

At TTS, classroom based Driver CPC continues to deliver strong value, particularly through discussion, shared experience and real world scenarios brought into the training environment.

Jock Foster recently completed a full week of CPC with us and said:

“Completed a week's CPC with G and he was first class. Content and his real life background experiences helped bring the course to life. Professional throughout with lots of discussions and belly laughing thrown in.”

David Clegg also shared his experience of classroom delivery:

“Normally CPC driver training is boring, not on this occasion. Just completed a full 5 days with TTS trainer Graham that made the week a lot more bearable by making everyone participate and we all shared our knowledge and experiences. Don't bother doing it online. Sign up and do it in person.”

Do Your DCPC in 7 Hours Anywhere Anytime

We are pleased to announce that TTS will soon be introducing online Driver CPC delivery in partnership with DTS.

This new model will allow drivers to complete a full 7 hour approved CPC module remotely, providing greater flexibility for operators and drivers who require a more accessible option.

While classroom based training remains a powerful and engaging experience, online delivery will support:

• Drivers working varied shift patterns

• Multi site operators

• Businesses looking to reduce travel time and downtime

Full details and launch dates will be announced shortly. This development strengthens our commitment to providing flexible, compliant and accessible training solutions across the transport sector.

Compliance Risks Operators Should Consider

Failing to keep Driver CPC up to date can result in drivers being unable to legally operate vehicles. This may lead to:

• Immediate operational disruption

• Fixed penalties• Increased enforcement scrutiny

• Risk to operator licence standing

Forward planning removes these risks and ensures your fleet remains road ready.

Planning Your DCPC Strategy for 2026

A strong approach should include:

• Reviewing expiry dates across your driver workforce

• Scheduling training evenly across the five year cycle

• Using a mix of online and classroom delivery where appropriate

• Aligning CPC topics with operational priorities

With flexible online options now available and engaging classroom delivery continuing to add value, compliance can now be managed more efficiently than ever.
