Creating opportunities for local people and investing in the future workforce continues to play an important role across the North East, and the partnership between North East Concrete and Tyneside Training Services is helping do exactly that through apprenticeships, mentoring and long term development.
With apprentices Alex and Joseph currently progressing within the business, North East Concrete continue to demonstrate their commitment to supporting young people entering industry and providing genuine career opportunities across the region.
Operations Manager Michael Johnson spoke positively about the future of apprenticeships within the company and the importance of creating opportunities that allow young people to grow both personally and professionally.
“We have Joseph and Alex with us at the moment, however we see progression moving forward with additional apprentices as we have lots of different opportunities around site where we can develop apprentices’ confidence, knowledge, ability and work life experiences.”

For Alex, a local lad from Birtley, joining North East Concrete has already provided valuable experience within a supportive working environment where he has quickly become part of the team.
“I’d say the biggest surprise for me was how welcoming everyone has been since day one. Straight away people took the time to help me settle in, answer questions and make me feel part of the team. It made starting the role a lot easier and has helped me really enjoy working here.”

Alongside workplace experience, the partnership between North East Concrete and TTS has focused heavily on ongoing support, communication and mentoring throughout the apprenticeship journey. Rather than simply delivering qualifications, the approach has centred around understanding both the needs of the employer and the individual learner to help create long term success.
Michael highlighted the level of engagement and support provided throughout recruitment, onboarding and day to day communication.
“They really care about the individual and finding the right person for the different roles we have assigned to Alex and Joseph.”

He also praised the face to face support and relationship built throughout the partnership.
“What I most like is not just the phone contact or email communication but the face to face commitment they have with both me and the apprentices.”

Alex also spoke positively about the support both organisations have provided throughout his development so far.
“Both North East Concrete and TTS have put a lot of time into supporting my development and helping build my confidence. I’ve always felt comfortable asking questions or getting support when needed, and that’s really helped me settle into the role and continue learning every day.”

For Joseph, choosing the apprenticeship route offered the opportunity to gain experience straight away and begin building a long term career within the industry.
“I never really saw university as the right path for me, so I wanted to go down the apprenticeship route instead and start building experience straight away. When I came across North East Concrete, it seemed like a great opportunity, so I applied and I’m really glad I did.”
Joseph, Business Administration Apprentice
His experience within the business has continued to strengthen his confidence and development as he gains exposure to new opportunities across the company.
“My experience so far has been really positive. Every day is different and I’m constantly getting new opportunities to learn and gain experience. It’s a good environment to be in and I feel like I’m developing more confidence and knowledge as I continue working with the team.”
Joseph, Business Administration Apprentice

Joseph also highlighted the tailored support he has received throughout his apprenticeship journey.
“TTS have supported me as much as possible throughout my apprenticeship and have adapted parts of the coursework to better suit the way I learn, which has really helped me develop and stay confident in my work.”

As both apprentices continue progressing within their roles, the focus remains firmly on long term development, creating future opportunities and investing in the next generation of skilled workers across the North East.
Alex spoke proudly about where he hopes his future within the business will lead.
“I hope to still be with North East Concrete in the future and continue progressing within the company. I want to keep learning, work my way through the ranks and become the best I can be. I’m really grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given and I genuinely enjoy being part of the team.”

Michael believes apprenticeships play an important role not only in supporting businesses today, but also in building sustainable futures for years to come.
“These young individuals are the future of the business and that’s the way I see it and the way that TTS recruit. I feel valued and supported in everything we are trying to achieve not just with the apprentices but also they are interested in the business and what we need to suit our needs. We are really looking for longevity with the apprentices. This isn’t a short term fix.”
